RARE c.1890 MIANKO KAROO “CONGO GIANT” SIDESHOW CABINET CARD — PENTZ, YORK, PA — SAME COMPOSITION DOCUMENTED BY THE SMITHSONIANOriginal late-19th-century cabinet card photograph of Mianko Karoo, the celebrated sideshow performer historically exhibited under the billing “The Congo Giant.”This is an especially desirable example because the same photographic composition is held and positively identified by the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture as a “Cabinet card of sideshow actor Mianko Karoo,” dating it to approximately 1890. The Smithsonian identifies the photographer as Bransby Cooper Pentz (1854–1928) of York, Pennsylvania. The match is unmistakable. Karoo stands at left wearing an extraordinary theatrical costume consisting of a tall fur headdress with plume, long dark robe decorated with floral embroidery, fur across the chest and waist, fur-trimmed boots, large hoop earrings and facial markings. His left arm is dramatically extended horizontally over the top hat of the much shorter man standing beside him.The unidentified companion rests one hand on a studio chair. Behind them is an elaborate photographer’s backdrop incorporating tropical vegetation and architectural decoration. These details correspond closely to the Smithsonian’s catalog description of its example. The mount bears the distinctive photographer’s signature “Pentz” at lower left and “YORK, PA.” at lower right.MIANKO KAROO — “THE CONGO GIANT”Karoo was part of the extraordinary world of late-19th-century American sideshow entertainment, in which performers were frequently given exoticized biographies, costumes and promotional identities. The historical “Congo Giant” billing is independently documented. Potter & Potter catalogued another period photograph as “Portrait of Mianko Karoo the Congo Giant,” describing Karoo posed with one arm extended over the man beside him. That photograph was attributed to Sword Bros., York, Pennsylvania, circa 1885. The Smithsonian records Karoo as born circa 1868, while noting that his later life and date of death remain unknown.
