Rare 1894 Freeman Hotel Antique Journal / Ledger – Auburn, California Gold Rush:
$995.00

For your consideration is an incredibly rare, historically significant 1894 handwritten manuscript journal/ledger from the famous Freeman Hotel in Auburn, California. This exceptional piece of California history was kept under the proprietorship of H.A. Freeman during a year of unprecedented national and local upheaval.

The Freeman Hotel was the premier establishment in Auburn, encompassing an entire city block directly adjacent to the Central Pacific/Southern Pacific transcontinental railroad depot. In 1894, this very hotel served as the frontline staging ground and meeting hub for railroad executives, military officers, and federal marshals during the infamous, violent Pullman Rail Strike, as well as the local hub for engineers and lawyers constructing the landmark Placer County Courthouse.

An irreplaceable, primary-source archive detailing daily operations, transactions, or personal notes from a legendary Mother Lode transit hub.

Historical Context (1894: A Year of Fire & Gold)

The Pullman Railroad Strike: In July 1894, the transcontinental railroad ground to a halt. Just down the track in Sacramento, U.S. Marshal Barry Baldwin was trampled by striking workers, prompting President Grover Cleveland to deploy the U.S. Army to secure the mountain passes. The Freeman Hotel—sitting directly at the Auburn depot—was at the absolute center of this military and corporate occupation.

The Gold Mining Boom: This journal perfectly captures the era when massive local industrialized corporate operations, like the nearby million-dollar Taylor-Idlewild Gold Mine, were pulling fortunes out of the American River canyons and funneling commerce straight through Auburn.

Why This Belongs in Your Collection

Original 19th-century hotel material from critical Northern California mountain depots rarely survives. Because the Freeman Hotel was demolished in the 1970s, authentic artifacts bearing H.A. Freeman's name are highly sought after by local historians, Placer/El Dorado County archives, and Western Americana collectors.
