Rare 18th Century New England Yellow Birch Skewed Panel Raising Plane
Up for sale is an exceptional early Americanskewed panel-raising plane, constructed of yellow birch, with a distinctive pinned wooden tote characteristic of the earliest American plane-making tradition.
The plane is in remarkably good original, unaltered condition. The body has no repairs, flattening, or other alterations, retaining its original surfaces, patina, and construction details. It is unmarked.
Included is the original cutting iron, an interesting early hand-forged example in its own right. The iron is unmarked and exhibits the irregular surface and primitive workmanship associated with early blacksmith-forged tooling. I believe it to be original to the plane.
The wedge is a well-made, well-matched replacement; the original wedge was missing. It fits the plane attractively and complements the body.
