Rare 1930s Walt Disney Mickey Minnie Mouse Child’s Parasol Umbrella Japan
Description:
A wonderful and scarce piece of early Walt Disney memorabilia dating to the 1930s! This charming child’s parasol features delightful illustrations of Mickey and Minnie Mouse in their early cartoon styles, complete with pie-cut eyes, oversized shoes, and wonderfully expressive faces.
The lightweight orange fabric canopy is decorated with pink polka dots and illustrations of Mickey and Minnie in navy blue and pale pink. Particularly appealing is the period copyright marking reading © Walt Disney Enterprises Ltd., identifying this as an early authorized Disney product.
Made in Japan, the parasol has a wooden shaft, a decorative marbled handle in shades of red and cream, and a small cord with a bead at the end. The metal opening mechanism is marked Japan.
Originally intended as a child’s novelty or play parasol rather than a substantial rain umbrella, it is a marvelous survivor from the earliest years of Disney character merchandising.
Measurements:
* Approximately 22 inches in diameter when open
* Approximately 19 1/2 inches long when closed
* Approximately 2 1/2 inches wide when folded
Condition:
Good antique condition considering its age and delicate construction. The orange fabric retains attractive color, and the character illustrations remain wonderfully appealing. There is some scattered spotting, light fading, and a tiny hole along a fold near the Mickey Mouse illustration with the copyright marking. The wooden shaft and decorative handle show age-appropriate wear. The parasol opens and displays nicely.
Early Disney fabric novelties are particularly difficult to find in surviving condition, especially examples with recognizable period character artwork. This delightful piece would make a wonderful addition to a collection of early Mickey and Minnie Mouse memorabilia, prewar Disney toys, or vintage children’s novelties.
A charming piece of Disney history, approximately 90 years old!
