Rare Spanish–American War Celluloid Button — 51st Iowa Volunteer Infantry, Company M
Circa 1900 — 2 1/8 inches
Rare celluloid button commemorating Company M of the 51st Iowa Volunteer Infantry, featuring a group photograph of the soldiers and the inscriptions “Co. M,” “51st Iowa,” and “Welcome Home, Red Oak, Ia.” The button retains its red, white, and blue ribbon.
The reverse lists the company’s engagements in the Philippines, including San Roque, Malolos, Quingua, Calumpit, Pulilan, Apalit, San Tomas, Calulut, San Fernando, and Angeles. This unusual commemorative piece documents the service of Iowa soldiers during the Philippine campaign and their welcome home to Red Oak. A scarce and visually appealing survivor of the Spanish–American War era, with connections to both Iowa military history and the Philippine-American War.
Condition:Extremely Fine, with a light raised crease on the “S” in “San Roque,” as made.
