Offered for your consideration is an extremely rare and seldom seen 6" x 6" wide by 2 3/4" tall square serving bowl actually used in the restaurant and made in a stunning ancient Mayan culture pattern for the famous Restaurant Mayan that was located in the International Building at the Rockefeller Center in New York City.
This pattern rarely surfaces, and when it does, this type of the square 6" serving bowl is even a much rarer piece than the rare dinner plate or luncheon plate. It should also be noted that this pattern is "not" the tan base Mayer pattern called Mayanware; rather, this was a custom pattern that was created specifically for the famous Restaurant Mayan in New York. Historically, the Restaurant Mayan was a very upscale restaurant in New York City located within Rockefeller Center in the International Building at 16 West 51st Street. It first opened for business in 1936 and quickly became one of the most popular restaurants in the area in and around the then newly constructed Rockefeller Center.

The restaurant was not only famous for its menu selections that changed daily, but also for having a beautiful Mayan inspired decor that gave patrons a unique dining experience. One of its advertising slogans literally was "Every Day a Famous National Dish" that was prepared by high-end chefs and a well trained culinary staff.
But not only businessmen, famous celebrities in town, NBC staff (which the NBC studios for New York were and Radio City Music Hall are located in the Rockefeller Center), politicians, and so many others that called upon the restaurant for meals, drinks, and the social ambience, but the many tourist and visitors to New York that were touring and or doing business at the Rockefeller Center dined there as well. Also referred to as "30 Rock", atop the center was also the observation roofs were people could view the entire metropolitan area of New York from the there, which was a major attraction itself. For some years, the restaurant continued operations until it closed sometime around 1974 becoming part of the City's lost history.
Not only was the china adorned in this pattern, but the matchbooks and some of the other items from the restaurant were made to appear as the china pattern was. Again too, this is the first such square art-deco bowl made as such from the Mayan Restaurant there and consider this pattern not only very rare, but this type of serving bowl even rarer.
The bowl was made by the Mayer China Co., in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. The backstamp reads as follows: "Restaurant Mayan - International Building - Rockefeller Center - By Mayer China Co." It has the "257" datemark signifying it was made in 1957. It has no cracks, no chips, and only very light usage, though it does have a couple of small stains. It is the heavyweight type steamship, hotel, and railroad china. It would have been used in connection with the Mayan Restaurant hotel silver soldered - silver plate and glassware type serving items for actual table - dining room service.
