Offered here is a new and unread first printing of the color edition of The Complete EC Library MAD Volume 1, a genuine First Edition hardcover book with the very rareoriginal uncorrected copyright page in place!
The first printing of Russ Cochran\'s MAD Volume 1 contained an error that was discovered only after the earliest copies had been shipped to subscribers: the book\'s copyright was misattributed to Willam M. Gaines instead of to E.C. Publications, as it should have stated. To fix the error, the publisher prepared a sticker with the correct information printed on it and physically pasted it directly onto the copyright page of every copy of the book that remained in his inventory. He also separately mailed just the sticker to the few collectors who\'d purchased the book before the correction sticker was applied, and asked these previous buyers to retroactively apply the sticker to their own copies of the book--a request to which a surprisingly large number of them complied. All of which explains why copies of this book without a sticker in place on the copyright page are so hard to find today, and why collectors will pay a premium for a copy with an unblemished copyright page in place.
To see for yourself just how scarce uncorrected copies of MAD Volume 1 really are, I invite you to search for other listings of this book, either as a standalone volume or as part of the four-volume Complete MAD set. Then, check to see how many of those listings include a copy of MAD Volume 1 with the original unstickered copyright page intact. Spoiler alert: you\'ll search for a long, long time before you run across another.
Beyond the key distinction of having an unstickered copyright page, the copy of MAD Volume 1 offered here is an outstanding example of this out of print collectible (which, I might add, will never be reprinted in this format.) The book is in stunning condition, unread and practically untouched since the day it rolled off the printing press forty years ago. In fact, the publisher\'s original shrinkwrap is still loosely in place on the cover, hvThe cover is still enclosed in the original publisher\'s opened shrink-wrap, which I opened to photograph the book\'s copyright page and inside back cover for this listing, and then reinserted the book back into the opened shrink wrap. Suffice it to say, this is a pristine copy, with interior pages that are not only unread, but have been essentially untouched since this book rolled off the printing press forty years ago!
Because first printings of MAD Volume 1 were published before any of the subsequent volumes in the series,the background color on the cover and binding of every true first printing of MAD Volume 1 displays a variant, slightly lighter shade of red than that which was used to print the covers of the subsequent volumes in the set. The other distinctive feature true first printings of MAD Volume 1 is that the front and back covers are printed with slightly thicker and more sturdy boards than those that were used on the subsequent volumes in the set.
