SPANAM, INDIAN WARS, U.S. ARMY, MODEL 1881, CORD RINGS, MATCHED SET
These are authentic Model 1881 Dress Helmet side scroll buttons with attached cord rings (often referred to in Period Army Regulations as scrolls and rings).
The brass identification plate is not included.
Identification & Function
Purpose: Positioned high on each side of the crown on U.S. Army Model 1881 Mounted Dress Helmets (Cavalry, Light Artillery, etc.).
Function: The rings held the heavy braided wool or bullion helmet cords in place so they would properly drape across the front and back of the helmet body before descending to the chest.
Construction: Stampings featuring an ornate Victorian floral/scroll motif with a swinging brass ring suspended from the center. The reverse features a metal/lead backing and dual wire prongs used to anchor the piece through the felt/cork helmet body.
Intact Wires: A major factor for collectors restoring helmets is the presence of the original long copper/brass attachment prongs on the reverse. This matched set still have both intact prongs, they hold full usability/restoration value.Original solder and prongs on the back.
Finish & Plating: The bright gold-gilt finish shows virtually no oxidation or heavy verdigris.
