An original souvenir pennant from the second inauguration of Franklin D. Roosevelt on January 20, 1937 — the first presidential inauguration held on that date, following the passage of the 20th Amendment. Navy felt with cream printing: FDR’s portrait in upward-gazing pose surrounded by ornate script reading “Inauguration / President F.D. Roosevelt / January 20th 1937,” with “WASH. D.C.” in large block letters along the upper edge. Approximately 27.5” x 10.5.”
Condition reflects its nearly 90 years: ink flaking to the “W” in Washington, staining at the staff end, and minor staining to lettering. Portrait and overall design remain legible. Tip intact.
Noted as scarce in the specialist literature (Collins 1120). From the collection of Dr. Goodman Basil Espy, an Atlanta physician and lifelong collector whose holdings were offered at Christie’s.
