𝐈𝐭𝐞𝐦 data-start=\"105\" data-end=\"623\">Original nineteenth-century stereoview depicting Veta Pass in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of southern Colorado. Despite the similar names, this view is correctly identified as Veta Pass rather than an Idaho location. The Denver & Rio Grande Railroad constructed its standard-gauge line over Veta Pass in 1899 after replacing the earlier narrow-gauge crossing at nearby La Veta Pass, making the route one of the most significant mountain railroad crossings in the American West.
The dramatic mountain scenery and railroad engineering associated with the pass made it a favorite subject for commercial stereoscopic photographers during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Stereo views such as this were prized for their remarkable three-dimensional effect when viewed through a stereoscope and remain highly collectible today. Collectors of Colorado history, western Americana, railroad history, and nineteenth-century photography will appreciate the historical significance of this image.
Please note that this stereoview is misidentified as being from Idaho. The location is correctly attributed to Veta Pass, Colorado, an important Denver & Rio Grande mountain crossing in Huerfano County. If the mount bears a publisher\'s imprint or series number, it may allow even more precise identification.
