Spider-Man: The Lost Years is a character-focused story set during Ben Reilly\'s years of wandering after his original appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #149. Writer J.M. DeMatteis explores Ben\'s struggle with his identity, his growing relationship with Janine, and his determination to help others despite believing that he is only a clone.
#1 – August 1995, “Strangers”: Believing himself to be a clone of Peter Parker, Ben Reilly wanders across the country, trying to find a purpose for his life. He arrives in Salt Lake City, where he meets Janine Godbe, a waitress with a troubled past, and Detective Jacob Raven, a dedicated police officer. When Raven\'s family is targeted by a criminal organization led by Vincent Tannen, Ben is drawn into a dangerous situation that forces him to decide whether he can continue living as an uninvolved drifter. Meanwhile, Kaine, the first failed clone of Peter Parker, secretly follows Ben, driven by jealousy and hatred.
#2 – September 1995, “Intimacies”: Ben becomes increasingly involved in Salt Lake City\'s criminal investigation after Raven\'s family is attacked. He rescues Raven\'s injured son and begins building a relationship with Janine, finding a sense of belonging he has lacked throughout his years of wandering. At the same time, Kaine becomes entangled with Detective Louise Kennedy, who has ties to Tannen\'s organization. As the criminal conspiracy deepens, Ben\'s growing happiness is threatened by the violence surrounding him and the secrets kept by those closest to the investigation.
#3 – October 1995, “The Truth”: The conflict with Tannen escalates when Kennedy is ordered to kill Ben, while Kaine discovers that she has been deceiving him. Kaine\'s rage threatens everyone involved, but Ben intervenes to protect Raven\'s son and prevent further bloodshed. After the immediate danger passes, Ben returns to Janine and discovers that she is preparing to leave, forcing him to confront the secrets and painful history that complicate their relationship. The story brings Ben\'s Salt Lake City adventure to a turning point while setting up the continuing conflict between Ben and Kaine.
