This lovely medal shows St Giles sitting in a forest giving food to a deer from his hand. According to legend, St Giles made his home in a forest where his only friend was a deer.
St Giles’ legend claims that he was born in Greece and was acclaimed for his wisdom and learning. However, he longed to live a private life, so he moved to France and lived in a forest where he befriended a deer. One day some hunters chased the deer into St Giles’ cave and shot an arrow at the deer. The arrow missed the deer but wounded the saint and causing him to be disabled. The king, after hearing of Giles’ piety, built him a monastery in the forest where he lived out his life with a few fellow monks. St Giles died in 543
