This is either a Stanley or a Standard Rule No.79. extra wide, with board scales on the inside. The rule is unmarked but only Stanley Rule of New Britain CT and Standard of Unionville CT marked this designation as a no.79. Stanley produced it from 1855-1915, and Standard* from 1872 until a fire ended production in 1888. (* Standard reorganized as Upson Nut in 1889 and also produced this rule, but the only example im aware of, of a Upson No.79 looks significantly different than either the Stanley and Standard styles).
This example exhibits general wear, but is handsome with nice grain to the boxwood, all figures easy to read, and a dark, uncleaned patina on the brass. It folds up nicely and all three alignment pins are present. A rare survivor from an estate in rural Maine.
