The bridge is an earlypinned Pratt through-truss, with the nameSTONE STREETprominently painted across the upper portal and a clearly visible1902 date plaqueabove the entrance. Historic bridge records identify the former Stone Street crossing as an unusually compactfour-panel pinned Pratt through trussover Bridge Creek; that early bridge was subsequently replaced.Historic Bridges
The photograph provides an unusually detailed architectural record of the bridge in service, including its riveted and pinned ironwork, portal bracing, diagonal tension members, timber roadway, and the adjoining dirt approach. A substantial wood-frame commercial or industrial building with a rooftop cupola stands immediately beside the bridge, while utility lines and smaller outbuildings document the surrounding early Augusta streetscape.
Augusta was first settled in1856, when the community was known as Bridge Creek. The creek itself was central to the town’s early development: pioneer John F. Stone and L. F. Clarke established the community’s first industrial enterprise, a sawmill along Bridge Creek, and Stone also helped construct an early dam across the stream. The postcard is printed onAZO photographic paperwith the early divided-back format and four-triangle stamp box associated with the early real-photo-postcard era. Combined with the 1902 bridge and the documented replacement of this truss before the later modern crossing, the image is consistent with approximately thefirst decade of the 20th century to early 1910s.
