Original 1923 copies of the first and second issues of the Cornell University student pictorial magazine newspaper, The Cornell Graphic (1923-1926).Features images from football, polo, soccer, crew, women’s sports (hockey, hurdles, baseball), R.O.T.C., theatre productions, band performances, and even Egyptian archaeological artifacts found by Cornell professors. Possibly some of the only surviving examples of this rare, short-lived, and somewhat controversial publication.
According to the June 10, 1926 issue ofCornell Alumni News,The Cornell Graphicceased publication after a controversial issue resulted in discipline for multiple staff members, and all remaining issues were destroyed. A printout of this alumni news article will be included in the shipment of these items.
Acquired from the estate of the granddaughter-in-law of Max F. Schmitt, Cornell Class of 1924.Mr. Schmitt was the business manager for The Cornell Graphic.His name appears as “M.F. Schmitt” in the masthead of both these issues. Mr. Schmitt had graduated before the controversy described above.
Please note these two issues of the newspaper are extremely fragile. On issue No. 2, the cover and back pages are torn from the center staples and the back page is torn in half at the fold line.See pictures for details. Thank you.
