Up for your consideration, is this vintage, black and white lithograph of the Dayton flood of 1913. This lithograph was from an original photo by Henry Ellsworth. Staff artist. It depicts Main Street, looking north from 5th St., Wednesday, 8:30 AM on March 26, 1913.
The Great Dayton Flood of 1913 was a regional event and still ranks as Ohio’s worst natural disaster, with 467 deaths statewide. No ways to keep up. The storm began with 58 mph wind gusts on March 21, 1913. Then on March 23, Easter Sunday, the rain began dumping 8 to 11 inches over a five day period. Dayton’s levees were overwhelmed or failed outright, and the great Miami river flooded downtown.
This is a very important historical piece of Ohio’s history! The lithograph is in good, original, used condition with traces of history and well proportioned character. There are signs of tearing and yellowing. Please check out my pictures carefully to form your own opinion on condition. It measures approximately 24“ x 18 1/2“ unframed. Framed it measures 25 3/8 inches by 19 7/8 inches. It is framed but not glass plastic.
