Up for sale is a genuine, museum-worthy piece of traditional Ukrainian folk art — an authentic vintage glazed ceramic kumanets (doughnut-shaped festive ring pitcher), handcrafted and hand-painted in the legendary tradition of Kosiv painted ceramics.
UNESCO World Heritage Status:Cultural Significance: In 2019, the traditional craft of Kosiv painted ceramics was officially inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.Regional Heritage: Born at the intersection of the Pokuttya and Hutsulshchyna ethnocultural regions in the upper Prut River basin, this unique pottery tradition is world-renowned for its intricate double-firing craftsmanship and vibrant folk motifs.
Provenance & Acquisition:Direct History: Personally acquired in Kosiv at the iconic Smodna Fair (Kosiv Market) directly from an elderly local woman who kept this item in her family line since approximately 1940.
Key Features & Decoration:Zoomorphic Sculpted Handle: Features a distinctive loop handle in the shape of a horned ram / goat head with a ridged horn motif running along the upper arch.Hand-Painted Solar Symbolism: The main disk displays a traditional Hutsul solar rosette surroundedby intricate floral elements.Iconic Palette: Decorated in classic Kosiv glaze tones — green, yellow, and brown-red on a light cream engobe slip.

Unrestored.Glaze Craquelure: Natural, overall crazing (fine micro-crackle network) throughout the remaining glaze surface.Widespread Glaze & Engobe Loss: Flaking, wear, and loss of glaze/engobe across the body, rim, edges, and handle, exposing the underlying native terracotta red clay.Hairline Crack & Water Seepage Test: Visible hairline crack running across one side of the central disk.A water test confirms slow moisture seepage along the crack line, proving it is not watertight!!!Usage Note: Sold strictly as an authentic collectible folk art display piece. Not intended for liquids or food use.
