Item: US AEF WW1 3rd Army French Theater Badged Bugler M-1912 Summer Cotton Tunic
Markings:"COAT / Size 6 / REGULAR / INCHES / 38" tag at the interior right collar. "ALVIN GREIF / July 11, 1917 / BALTIMORE DEPOT Q.M.C." maker and date label inside the lower right front pocket.
Measurements:The tunicmeasures 19" from underarm to underarm across the chest, 16" from shoulder to shoulder across the back, 27 1/2" from the collar/body seam to the bottom of the hem down the back, and with a 24" sleeve from the shoulder to the end of the cuff.
Condition:This tunic is in Good Condition. Missing the second from top, middle, and bottom front buttons. Missing the securing "spinner" from the Artillery BOS collar disc. Some loose edge sewing to the overseas chevrons at the left cuff. Some light loose edge sewing to the bottom of the 3rd Army patch at the left shoulder. A few loose or missing strands of embroidery from that 3rd Army patch. Some scattered whitish and dark spot soiling throughout. Features a beautiful French theater made 3rd Army patch at the left shoulder, 1 year's worth of gold bullion overseas chevrons at the left cuff, "US" and Artillery BOS Battery F "crossed cannons" collar discs, and a tan on OD wool Bugler First Class specialist chevron at the right sleeve. Classic short "stand and fall" collar with a fully functional dual metal "hook and eye" neck closure, 4 front pocket design, brownish olive drab cotton construction, and all but three of the original "American eagle" embosseddarkened brass buttons throughout.

Bugle calls were used for signaling advance, attack, charge, and retreat, as well as for mustering the troops. Buglers were a main target for the enemy, as knocking out communication in the heat of battle could further disrupt troops already shaken by the confusing fog of war.
