The U.S.S. E.B. Hale was a Union Navy gunboat, a 220-ton steamer with 32-pounder guns. It spent most of the Civil War performing patrol, blockade and reconnaissance work mostly in the waters of South Carolina and Georgia. By May 1865, the Hale was placed out of commission at Philadelphia and on June 20th, the Navy sold the vessel.
Offering a 5 x 5 manuscript declaration, dated May 1st, 1865, certifying that CHARLES H. RAMSDELL “is now serving on board of this Vessel in the capacity of Seaman. O.B. Gilman, Acting Assist. Paymaster” The sheet is attached by straight pin to a slightly larger sheet, which contains Ramsdell’s name, Co. C, 32 Regt, May 1 ’65.
