POLICE SWORDS: The Uruguayan Police were trained to use short swords as a kind of billy-club; it was a very effective way to subdue anyone using the cold steel of the side of the blade. None of these swords were ever sharpened.
MEASUREMENTS AND CONDITION: This Police Short Sword measures 30 inches overall, and the blade measures 24-1/2 inches. The blade is in good condition with a few spots of rust and minor corrosion. The brass hilt is also in good condition showing normal wear. The top of the cross guard appears to have had a small piece broken off at some point. This sword was definitely used by a policeman in Uruguay, the hilt shows wear from use, and the blade, while in good condition, shows dings and marks from use – the sword was used but not abused.
MARKS: On the ricasso it reads: BROQUA & SCHOLBERG, MONTEVIDEO. On the right side of the pommel there is the figure of a rooster; a feature found on most police swords in Uruguay.
SCABBARD: The leather scabbard has brass end pieces at both ends. The brass section at the top has a brass belt hook. The brass piece at the tip has been banged up a bit. The leather is marked on the sewing side near the top: 1135.
Note: Broqua & Scholberg was a large retailer and gun shop in Montevideo, Uruguay. It was connected to the Scholberg & Gadet house of Liege Belgium. Broqua & Scholberg was the largest importer of firearms and swords in Uruguay in the second half of the 19thcentury. Most of the swords ordered by Broqua & Scholberg came from Germany although we have seen a few made in France. Broqua & Scholberg would order the swords and have them stamped in Europe with their company name.
This is a unique Police Short Sword and it most likely whacked the heads of several miscreants in its day. It belongs in a fine sword collection.
