Offered here is a fascinating collection of original vintage railroad photographs featuring multiple train wrecks, derailments, locomotives, freight cars, cabooses, and railroad scenes dating primarily from the 1950s through the early 1970s.
Research indicates that several of the black-and-white snow-covered wreck photographs document a Denver & Rio Grande Western derailment involving D&RGW caboose No. 01456, which is recorded as having been photographed wrecked in June 1952. The collection includes multiple views of what appears to be this same accident, showing derailed equipment in a dramatic snowy Rocky Mountain setting.
The collection also contains a separate group of color derailment photographs, believed to date from approximately the late 1960s to early 1970s. Visible equipment includes a Monon Railroad freight car, a Union Pacific boxcar, and other wrecked rolling stock. Several photos show the surrounding landscape, railroad crossings, damaged cars, and cleanup scenes. One photograph in the collection also appears to show Denver & Rio Grande Western locomotive No. 5317, helping place at least some of the later material in the post-1967 period.
Also included are additional vintage railroad photographs showing locomotives, freight equipment, cabooses, railroad personnel, and trackside scenes.
