Jóhann Kristinn Pétursson (1913–1984) lived an extraordinary, globe-trotting life:* The Growth Spurt: Born in Dalvík, Iceland, Johann grew at a perfectly average rate until he turned 15. Suddenly, an accelerated growth spurt triggered intense physical development. At 17, he possessed enough raw strength to lift a commercial truck, but by his 20s, his incredible height began taking a severe toll on his mobility.* Trapped in WWII: In the 1930s, because of limited local job prospects, he traveled to Europe to find work in music halls and variety shows under the stage name \"Olaf, the Nordic Giant\". When World War II broke out, he found himself stranded in German-occupied Copenhagen, waiting out the war by working in a shipyard.* The American Viking: In 1948, he emigrated to the United States to join the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. While he originally performed in a formal tuxedo and top hat, he eventually adopted the highly popular elaborate Viking armor, chainmail, and cape look seen on your card.* The Florida Connection: He eventually split away from major circuits to tour independently as a highly successful solo attraction, which allowed him to buy a permanent home in Elfers/Limona, Florida—the very address he penned onto the back of your postcard! He even dabbled in Hollywood, appearing in the 1950 movie Prehistoric Women and making a cameo in the 1980 cult classic film Carny. He ultimately returned home to Iceland later in life, passing away in 1984 at the age of 71.
