Boris Alexandrovich Mitskevich (born April 24, 1924) was a prominent Soviet restoration artist and ceramist. He is best known for pioneering the revival of lost 18th-century underglaze ceramic techniques, successfully reproducing thousands of historical tiles for the post-war restoration of the Peterhof Palace and the Menshikov Palace. These tiles were bought at the gift shop of a Moscow exhibition of his work. His highly specialized work focused on recreating authentic Delft-style and Russian painted tiles (izraztsy) to replace pieces lost during World War II.The defining hallmarks of his career include:
  • Peterhof Palace: Under the guidance of architect A.E. Hessen, Mitskevich led the recreation of thousands of tiles for the palace's intricate, floral-patterned ceramic stoves.
  • Marly Palace: He led a specialized team of ceramists to reproduce roughly 2,000 tiles across 150 historical variations based on a few surviving fragments.
  • Menshikov Palace: He headed the efforts to restore the tile interiors of the Menshikov Palace and subsequently published research on the recreation of 18th-century architectural ceramics.
