A large original antique photograph, 10 x 8 inches, mounted on card, by the celebrated London society photographer Vandyk — bearing the studio\'s signature in the print (bottom left) and a \"VANDYK\" stamp to the reverse.
Vandyk was one of Edwardian London\'s foremost portrait studios, founded by Carl Vandyk in 1882 (studio moved to Buckingham Palace Road in 1901, taken over by his son Herbert in 1913), and held numerous Royal Warrants — photographing British royalty alongside society figures, aristocrats, and stage stars of the day.
The sitter, an elegant and clearly well-to-do lady, is shown three-quarter length in a Louis XVI-style caned armchair, wearing a fashionable draped turban and veil pinned with a monogrammed brooch, over a caped coat. This orientalist turban style, popularised by designer Paul Poiret from around 1908, was at the height of fashion among society women in the years just before the First World War, dating this portrait to approximately 1908–1914.
Condition: an original period print showing genuine age — toning to the mount, some foxing spots, and creasing/damage to the top corners of the mount as pictured. The image itself remains clear and well-detailed.
