Vintage 1930s William Crawford Biscuit Tin Faux Wood Tea Caddy Box English: $185.00
A wonderful vintage English biscuit tin by William Crawford & Sons Ltd., dating to circa 1938, beautifully designed to resemble an antique Georgian wooden tea caddy. An exceptional example of decorative trompe-l\'œil artistry, this charming box is so convincingly finished that it can easily fool the eye into believing it is a finely crafted wooden antique rather than a humble biscuit tin.The exterior features an extraordinarily realistic faux burled wood grain in rich mahogany and walnut tones, complemented by intricate simulated marquetry, contrasting geometric banding, and striking oval starburst medallions on both the lid and front. The shaped corners, beveled lid, and decorative borders further enhance the illusion of a traditional 18th- or early 19th-century English tea caddy. The attention to detail is remarkable, transforming an everyday household container into an elegant decorative accessory.Measures 6.5 inches wide, 4 inches deep and 4 inches high. Good antique condition, there are some losses to the overlay on the exterior. The box retains its beautifully aged appearance, with surface wear, scratches, and imperfections consistent with its age and history, adding to its authentic vintage character. Oxidation to metal on the interior. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.William Crawford & Sons traces its origins to a biscuit bakery established in Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1813, which William Crawford acquired in 1856. The business grew into one of Britain\'s prominent biscuit manufacturers, eventually operating major facilities in Edinburgh and Liverpool. Like several distinguished British biscuit makers, Crawford\'s became known for imaginative decorative tins designed to be treasured and reused long after their original contents had been enjoyed.Dating to the late 1930s, this delightful example reflects the British tradition of producing elaborate biscuit tins that doubled as attractive household accessories. Today, these decorative containers are collected for their artistry, nostalgic appeal, and ingenious designs. This particular example would look equally at home in an English country house, traditional library, gentleman\'s study, or Ralph Lauren-inspired interior. Perfect for displaying on a desk, bookshelf, or occasional table, it also offers charming storage for small keepsakes and personal treasures.Check out our other antique listings.
