An Thoi, located on Phu Quoc Island in South Vietnam, became an important U.S. Navy coastal surveillance and support location during the Vietnam War. It was one of the coastal surveillance centers supporting Operation Market Time, which monitored South Vietnam’s coastline and waterways.
During the early 1970s, the war entered the Vietnamization period, when many U.S.-operated naval facilities and responsibilities were gradually transferred to the South Vietnamese Navy. An Thoi was among the major naval support bases transferred during this transition, giving a 1972 Naval Advisory theme meaningful historical context from the closing years of direct American involvement.
