This is an Ancient Order of United Workmen (A.O.U.W.) 25-year veteran membership screw back pin. The embossed portrait on the front of the pin depicts John Jordan Upchurch who founded the A.O.U.W in 1868. It holds the historical distinction of being the first \"fraternal benefit society\" - providing members with sickness, accident, and death benefits. It\'s peak membership was during the late 19th and early 20th centuries but the fraternity dissolved in 1952.
Based on the 1893 minimum threshold to be a 25-year veteran, the period of its popularity and the antique knurled screw-back hardware - this pin was made between the late 1890s and the 1920s.
This is a small pin - approx. 1/2\" x 1/2\" - looks to be made of brass.
