ORIGIN INFORMATION
Because this item is a natural, wild-grown marine specimen, its creator is the Cypraecassis rufa sea snail, a predatory marine gastropod mollusk native to the warm waters of the tropical Indo-Pacific region. To build its magnificent home, the living organism continuously secretes heavy layers of calcium carbonate and proteins from its specialized organ called the mantle, meticulously forming the shell over several years of growth. The snail deposits distinct, dense pigment fields to construct the dark marbled camouflage on the exterior dome, while simultaneously layering high-gloss, deep orange porcelain-like crystalline lattices along the inner lip to form its smooth, protective defensive shield. This biological engineering results in a uniquely durable, multi-layered shell wall that has made the species globally famous as the premier medium for European cameo carvers for generations.
