ITEM DESCRIPTION
Up for sale is a stunning, authentic vintage Mayan huipil from Colotenango, Guatemala, dating from the late 20th century (circa 1970s–1990s). This museum-quality garment is a spectacular example of traditional indigenous textile art, featuring a striking palette of vibrant red and crisp white vertical stripes. What makes this piece truly exceptional to collectors is its 100% hand-constructed nature. It is entirely hand-woven on a traditional backstrap loom, and every single assembly stitch—including the front panel joins, the side seams, and the beautiful scalloped blue neck lining—has been meticulously executed by hand with a needle and thread.
The chest features highly intricate, primary-colored geometric supplementary weft brocade displaying classic diamond patterns (diamantes). In addition to the loom-woven elements, the weaver went back over the garment to add exquisite surface hand-embroidery on top of the woven areas, giving the motifs incredible texture, dimension, and artistic depth. There are photos of the front, the back and of the garment turned inside out, and some macros of the stitchery details.FEATURES & SPECIFICATIONS
