D-LZ127 Registration Visible, Snowy Airfield, Kodak PaperDESCRIPTIONThis vintage photo postcard shows the Graf Zeppelin, the LZ 127 airship, approaching its home hangar across a snow covered field, printed on Kodak photographic paper from an original period negative; the "Kodak Paper" stamp box on the back places this specific print in the 1950s or later, making it a later photographic reproduction of the image rather than a postcard mailed during the airship's active years.Her name, "GRAF ZEPPELIN," is lettered in script along the lower hull, with the civil registration D-LZ127 clearly legible further aft next to one of her Maybach engine cars.A ground crew of roughly two hundred men, the standard complement for handling a ship this size at Friedrichshafen, hauls on cables fanned out from her belly and walks her toward the hangar by hand, tiny against the scale of the airship and the steel framed hangar mouth ahead of them, with a gantry bridge spanning the opening overhead.Rigid airships like the Graf Zeppelin carried no wheels or powered ground equipment of their own; every trip in or out of the shed depended on this kind of muscle power, the same method still in use years later at this same hangar for her larger sister ship Hindenburg.This home hangar stood at Friedrichshafen-Löwental on the shore of Lake Constance, the Zeppelin works' airfield since 1915 and the Graf Zeppelin's base throughout her career.
