Beautiful vintage Guna/Kuna mola textile pillow from Panama, featuring a richly layered geometric design in deep burgundy, burnt orange, mustard yellow, and dark charcoal tones.
The front is made using the traditional reverse-appliqué mola technique, with multiple layers of fabric carefully cut back and hand stitched to reveal the contrasting colors underneath. The close-up photos show the dense handwork especially well, including the fine outlining, stepped geometric forms, spirals, and tiny triangular cutwork details.
The back of the textile reveals the underlying stitch work and construction, which gives a wonderful look at how the design was built by hand. The mola panel has been made into a padded decorative pillow with a coordinating burgundy border.
