A truly beautiful piece of Japanese folk art.
Vintage handmade OSHIE — the traditional Japanese art of padded fabric relief, where silk and brocade pieces are hand-cut, padded, and layered to build a three-dimensional picture under glass. This craft goes back to the Edo period, when treasured kimono fabrics were too beautiful to throw away — so they were turned into art.
The subject is Fuji Musume, the Wisteria Maiden of kabuki dance: an elegant figure in layered brocade kimono fabrics with floral and gold-thread patterns, an ornate wide headdress with wisteria sprays, and sparkling glass-beaded kanzashi hair ornaments. Every fold of the kimono is a separate padded piece of real fabric.
