Vintage Julian Acero or Candelario Medrano attr. Mexican Folk Art Pottery Dog Holding Ducks. The piece depicts a dog wearing some type of clothing on the top half of its body, while holding a green basket of two baby ducks, held by metal wires. Unsigned, but attributed to Julian Acero or Candelario Medrano.
Julian Acero Covarrubias (Late 19th Century-1972) was a ceramic artist from Santa Cruz de las Huertas. At the time, the town originally used clay produce hand-made sewer pipes and roof tiles. Julian realized he could create more fun objects with clay and started making toys, whistles and banks, and was the first person to paint the clay with bright colors. Julian Acero also took Candelario Medrano into his family and taught him the craft. His works eventually contributed to what will become known as "barro betus", which is glazing the ceramic pieces with betus resin mixed with egg whites. This type of practice carries on with the Medrano and Ortega families. Julian's work was included in the Rockefeller Collection, who acquired his pieces around 1947-50. Julian taught his nephew Domingo Acero, who carries on the craft.
Candelario Medrano (1918-1986) was a ceramicist from Santa Cruz de las Huerta, Jalisco, Mexico. He first began by working to make clay sewer pipes. While he studied under Julian Acero, he transitioned to making whimsical pieces. He would make ceramic toys similar to Acero, but started to make sculptures of buildings, animals and vehicles, which is what he was known for. His legacy is carried on through his sons, Serapio and Benito, and their kids.
