VintageLaguna Pueblo Indian Etched Polychrome Pottery Jar, Lizards &Agave Design, Signed P.K. Lucario 93
Thisintricately carved or incised type of Native American pottery is also known asetched or sgraffito pottery. It is a specialty of the Lucario Familyof Laguna Pueblo in Central New Mexico.
This delightful jar is expertly hand carved with a design featuring two lizards alternating with what looks likethe member of the Agave genus of desert plants known as the CenturyPlant. The central designs are framed by a feather design above, and amodified Greek-key design below. Carving through a slip- orglaze-covered layer applied to the hand-coiled pot when it is in the\"leather\" or partially dry state, the artist must have asteady and exacting hand to accomplish this painstaking method,particularly when it comes to the background which is carved tosimulate prehistoric \"corrugated\" utilitarian pottery ofthe ancient Anasazi and Mogollon Peoples of the Southwest. Then, thepottery must be fired and then, fired again after the application ofa clear glaze which gives this jar its moderate sheen. This exceptional piece is signed by the artist on the base: P. K.Lucario, Laguna N.M. 93 (1993).
