Authentic oyster shell pendant created by a Santo Domingo Pueblo artisan. This is an unusually large piece for the genre, at 6 inches wide and 6.25\" high. It has been fitted with copper chain and used as a wall accent.
It has 4 \"quadrants\" divided by copper strips. The upper and lower sections are inlaid with crushed turquoise, the left is crushed either spiny oyster shell or coral, and the right section is mother of pearl. An excellent example of the inlay work that was traditional for the Santo Domingo Pueblo artists.
While I do not know the age of this, I purchased it 20 years ago from a Pueblo woman whose father had worn it as part of a necklace.
It is in good condition with what appears to be a small section of coral missing near the copper strip. Whether this occurred during its creation or later is not known. Please view photos.
