Vintage Lozi Bowl with Duck Lid - Authentic Hand Carved African Hardwood Lidded For Sale

This striking, authentic Lozi lidded food bowl is a premier example of mid-to-late 20th-century African utilitarian art. Hand-carved from a single, solid block of dense, rich African hardwood by the Lozi people of the Western Province (historically Barotseland) along the Zambezi River valley in Zambia, this mid-to-large-sized vessel features a beautifully streamlined silhouette topped with a stylized swimming duck finial that serves as a functional handle.Historically used to serve prepared meats and vegetables while keeping them warm, these bowls are highly prized today by collectors of global folk art, ethnographic artifacts, and organic mid-century modern design. The piece displays incredible, traditional craftsmanship. The thin, stepped inner lip of the lid is meticulously carved to form a flush, interlocking seal with the base. Inside, the continuous, rhythmic adze gouge marks remain clearly visible across the interior walls, proving it was hollowed entirely by hand rather than turned on a mechanical lathe. The flat oval base features beautiful, authentic surface oxidation, micro-scratches, and superficial friction wear consistent with a genuine, handled vintage object that spent decades in use, distinguishing it from modern souvenir reproductions.• Length: 10 inches (25.4 cm)
