Vintage Minister Marriage Record Book 1943-1958 Boston Mass Genealogy Ephemera: $37.49
Original mid-century minister's marriage register — Gibson's Marriage Records No. 10, published by C.R. Gibson & Co., Norwalk, Conn. This is an authentic used clergy record book, not a reproduction, kept by Rev. E. Joseph Evans of 111 Hobart Road, Newton, Massachusetts. The book is a landscape-format album with a stiff cream paper wrapper and black cloth-tape spine. Each opening holds a left-hand "Marriage Record" stub and a matching perforated, tear-out "Certificate of Marriage" on the right, printed in handsome blackletter and engraved-style type with an ornamental "This Is To Certify" banner. Several certificates remain in the book fully completed in period fountain-pen ink; many other certificate leaves remain crisp, blank and unused. Completed entries run from 1943 through 1958 and document Greater Boston weddings performed at Tremont Temple and Park Street Church in Boston, the Brookline Baptist Church, Emmanuel Baptist Church in Cambridge, the First Congregational Church in Newton, Pine Street Baptist Church in Milford, the Baptist Church in Lexington, and at the minister's own home in Newton. Names recorded include: - Wallace Victor Christensen of Saco, Montana and Mrs. Myrtle Lucille Schmidt of Cambridge — April 21, 1943
- William Morris Berton and Patricia Chappell Husbands, both of San Mateo, California — August 20, 1949, Brookline Baptist Church
- Calvin N. Williams and Pearl M. Hawthorne, both of 30 Evans Way, Boston — June 2, 1951, Park Street Church
- David Smith McLellan of Phoenix, Arizona and Mrs. Margaret Allen Sloane of Newton Centre — January 9, 1954, First Congregational Church, Newton
- Kenneth S. Messenger of Upton and Barbara E. Pyper of Hopedale — July 15, 1955, Pine Street Baptist Church, Milford
- Elliot Theodore Fair of Shelton, Connecticut and Sherrill Beverly Sanders of Arlington — August 29, 1957, Tremont Temple, Boston
- Gardner R. Mills and Isabel Yphantis, both of Lexington — July 12, 1958, Baptist Church, Lexington
- Marjorie Jane Thornton of Seattle, Washington — December 3, 1958, married at the minister's residence in Newton
Also laid in and paper-clipped to the leaves is an original Commonwealth of Massachusetts Certificate of Marriage, Form R-101, issued by the Town of Wareham for George Allen Worrall of Wareham and Alynne Amaral of Cambridge, married June 23, 1951 at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Cambridge — a handsome black-ground official form listing both sets of parents, ages, occupations and birthplaces. One later record stub was started and never finished. A genuine piece of Massachusetts social history with real genealogical content: full names, street addresses, hometowns, ceremony dates, churches and witnesses, all in period handwriting. Excellent for family-history researchers working Boston, Newton, Cambridge, Brookline, Lexington, Milford and Arlington lines; for church and New England history collections; and the unused engraved certificate leaves are outstanding stock for junk journaling, collage, altered art and framed display. Measures approximately 11 inches wide by 6-1/4 inches tall closed. Sold as found, as a historical document and collectible paper item. Condition: Used — good, honest condition consistent with age and working use. - Cover is toned and soiled overall with scattered foxing spots, surface handling marks, and light creasing; a small pen scribble is present at the lower left of the front cover
- Bottom right corner of the front wrapper is bumped with a small crease/dog-ear and minor paper loss at the tip
- Black spine tape shows edge wear and rubbing; text block is holding and pages turn normally
- Interior leaves are toned/cream with scattered foxing; a few leaves show light brown staining and rust transfer from the two original paper clips
- Ink entries are legible throughout, with the usual light show-through of handwriting from adjoining pages
- Perforated certificate edges are intact on the remaining leaves; no water damage or mold observed, no odor noted
- Loose Massachusetts certificate shows edge wear and rust marks at the clip points
