Beautiful Vintage Coiled Basket with Man-in-the-Maze Design by Unknown Papago Artist.
This used basketistightly coiled with a brown Man-in-the-Maze Design and black Devil's Claw finishing stitches at the rim.It measures 6 1/2 " in diameter x 7/8" high. Itis in very good condition with no major flaws noted.The Papago or Tohono O'odham people live southwest of Tucson, AZ. The design shows First Man entering the world pure in thought and deed with the trials and hard times in life ahead of him (the maze). If he tries his best, at the end of the maze he can follow the straight path back to purity. This is one of our favorite native stories and we chose it for the logo of our business.
We purchased this basket from an elderly couple who were moving from a large house to a senior living facility. They were avid collectors of Native American art for many years with most activity occurring during the 1980's and 90's.
