Costa Mesa Speedway, often referred to as Pete’s Speed Center in local racing circles, has been operational since 1969 at the Orange County Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa, California.
The venue was founded and promoted by speedway legends Harry Oxley and Jack Milne, who began organizing motorcycle speedway racing events there in the summer of 1969 after initial efforts in Van Nuys.It quickly became a cornerstone of American motorcycle speedway racing, hosting weekly events that drew standing-room-only crowds by 1971.
The track, known as the “Bullring,” is a 185-yard (1/10-mile) floodlit clay and decomposed granite oval, famous for its high-speed, no-brake racing format.It has continued to operate continuously since its opening, maintaining its role as a major venue for solo and sidecar speedway racing, as well as other classes like Pro Moto Knobby and junior divisions.
The “Pete’s Speed Center” decals were part of a series of vintage drag racing and hot rod shop logos that appeared in the 1960s and 1970s.
