This striking, hand-formed terracotta figural sculpture is rendered in the primitive, expressive style of ancient Mesoamerican burial art. The piece beautifully channels the West Mexican Shaft Tomb tradition (reminiscent of the Nayarit and Jalisco cultures), depicting a squatting male figure cradling a large ceremonial offering vessel or gourd.
The sculpture features a highly stylized, elongated face with pronounced features, large blocky ears, and hand-incised detailing along the fingers and toes. The natural, sun-baked earthenware clay is covered in a heavily mottled, dark speckling designed to mimic centuries of natural tomb oxidation and age.
