VintageRome Small Bronze Pitcher Catacombs Callisto Chi Rho Alpha Omega Souvenir
Vintage miniature decorative pitcher made of cast bronze metal with a greenpatina finish.
Crudely made to replicate ancient Roman vessels, onone side of the pitcher, "ROMA" is inscribed along with raisedChristian symbol iconology, the belly basket of loaves sitting on top of afish, that represents the ancient Christian symbol of the "Miracle of theLoaves and Fishes," closely associated with early Roman catacomb art. The other side features the Chi-Rho symbolflanking the Greek letters Alpha and Omega. This specific composition mirrors the earlyChristian graffiti, tombstones, and sacred vessels found preserved deep withinthe Roman catacombs.
The base of the pitcher is stamped with an embossed inscription that reads "CALLISTO" and "CATACOMBA"wrapped continuously around the circular foot.The inscription references the famous Catacombs of Rome. In the mid-20thcentury, these miniature verdigris-patina bronze jugs were popular historical andreligious souvenirs for tourists and pilgrims visiting the Catacombs of SaintCallixtus (San Callisto) located in Rome, Italy.
It measures approximately 2 3/4” H.
