Original vintage advertising matchbook from the University Club of Chicago, finished in deep green with the Club\'s circular seal on the front. This example remains FULL with all original matches intact and unstruck, with its original staple present. The spine is marked Universal Match, Chicago, and the matchbook has a reverse striker on the back.
Founded in 1887 by university graduates with an interest in literature and the arts, the University Club became part of Chicago\'s architectural history when members moved into their Gothic clubhouse at 76 E. Monroe Street in 1909. Designed by William Holabird and Martin Roche, the building brought the atmosphere of collegiate Gothic architecture into the rising skyline of downtown Chicago. This little advertising piece connects that long-running Chicago institution with the era when custom matchbooks were still an everyday part of club and hospitality advertising.
