Vintage Vaughan Sub-Zero Single Bit Axe that is All Original including Fawn\'s foot hardwood handle. Condition is Very Good to Excellent unrestored. Marked witrh Patent No. 1948548.Vaughan designed these axes specifically for chopping frozen wood in cold climates. They contain no high-carbon steel in the eye, which prevents the metal from crystallizing and cracking when used in sub-zero temperatures. Bit is 4 3/4 inches, poll is 3 1/4 inches, length is 36 inches overall, total weight 4 lbs. 12 oz. A beautiful well-cared for iconic brand axe. For serious collectors.The Vaughan & Bushnell Manufacturing Company (Vaughan) is a historic American hand tool maker established by blacksmith Alexander Vaughan in Chicago in 1869. Vaughan began producing high-quality axes, hatchets, and striking tools after inventing an improved post hole auger. After the 1871 Great Chicago Fire, investor Sidney Bushnell helped rebuild the operation, and the business was officially incorporated as Vaughan & Bushnell Manufacturing Company in 1882. By 1922, the Vaughan family bought out the Bushnell interests, solidifying a five-generation family legacy. The company expanded to a factory in Bushnell, Illinois in 1940. In 1993, Vaughan became the world\'s first striking tool manufacturer to earn ISO 9002 certification. Vaughan acquired the chisel and punch maker DASCO PRO in 2018. Facing financial difficulties, Vaughan announced plans to close in 2024. However, in May 2024, MARSHALLTOWN® acquired all of Vaughan\'s assets, saving the historic brand and modernizing its Bushnell operations. Historically, Vaughan made iconic axes, hatchets (including the famous Boy Scout Hatchet), and the beloved Supersportsman\'s Axe. They were also known for producing axes and hatchets under the Craftsman brand as well as specialized \"Sub-Zero\" lines for outdoor enthusiasts.
