Original box of 12 Venus Velvet No. 3557 pencils manufactured by the American Pencil Company. Beautiful early version with bright yellow-orange barrels, blue lettering, red erasers, gold-tone ferrules with blue bands, and the classic Venus de Milo illustrated package.
The No. 3557 is the classic Venus Velvet writing-pencil line, with this No. 2 designated Medium Soft. Artists and sketchers can use this grade for smooth general drawing, preliminary sketches, outlines and controlled shading, while retaining the point control of a traditional No. 2 graphite pencil.
The original inner sleeve identifies these as Blue Band Venus Velvet pencils and describes their construction as Colloidal Lead, Pressure Proofed, specially treated easy-to-sharpen cedar wood and rounded edges.
These vintage pencils date from 1939 to 1956, before the company's 1956 name change to Venus Pen and Pencil Corporation.
