Estate fresh carved wood seated female figure in the Yoruba tradition of Nigeria. The figure has a high ridged coiffure, incised facial scarification, hands placed on the hips, and an integral round base. Clusters of cowrie shells are tied at each side.
This example is consistent with early to mid-20th century carving. No claim is made as to a specific carver, shrine type, or exact date.
Provenance: I purchased this figure, along with several other African objects, about 20 years ago from a man then about 40 years old who said the pieces had belonged to his father. No written collection documents accompany the figure.
Approx 9.5\" high. Dark stained wood with wear to the high points. Cowrie shells show age and staining.
