Burleigh Ware "Butterfly" handle jug — BD&L, Burslem England, dated 2000
A beautiful hand-painted earthenware jug in the classic Burleigh Ware butterfly-handle form. The body has a soft yellow ground with a textured lower band, molded and hand-painted blue flowers with green foliage climbing the sides, and molded butterflies in deep red, black, and cream. The handle is the signature feature — sculpted as a cluster of butterflies and blossoms, fully hand-enameled. Flared rim with a hand-lined edge and a warm ochre foot. Approximately 8 inches tall.
Please read — important for collectors: This jug is marked "BURLEIGH WARE / BD&L / BURSLEM ENGLAND" with an impressed 2000 and the hand-painter's initials "MC." BD&L stands for Burgess, Dorling & Leigh, the company formed when the historic Burgess & Leigh pottery was sold in 1999. This piece is therefore a modern reissue produced circa 2000, made at the original Burslem factory using the classic Art Deco butterfly design (originally modeled by Charles Wilkes in the 1930s). It is not a period 1930s jug, which would carry the earlier B&L / beehive backstamp. I want to be completely clear about this up front so there are no surprises.
That said, this is a genuine Burleigh product from the historic Burslem pottery, individually hand-painted (not a transfer print) — the "MC" initials are the decorator's mark. The quality of the modeling and enameling is excellent.
Condition: Excellent. No chips, no cracks, no crazing, no repairs. Enamels bright and unworn, molded details sharp. Please review all photos, which form part of the description.
