ABOUT
The Torito de Pucará Folk Art Ceramic Bull originated in Santiago de Pupuja, in the Puno region of souther Peru, though they became widely known through the railway station in Pucará. In Peruvian culture they are a symbol protection, fertility, strength & good fortune. Pairs of these bulls are traditionally placed on the roofs of homes as “roof guardians” to bring prosperity, safeguard the family and/or ward off evil spirits. In ancient times they were used as ritual vessels (“pachas”) to hold sacred chicha (corn beer) during livestock blessing ceremonies. Bright spiral sun patterns, geometric bands, stylized flowers and vibrant colors are all classic Andean Motifs that represent energy, agricultural fertility & nature.
