Panoramic winter view over Brest-Litovsk (now Brest, Belarus) shows snow covered streets, long rows of low houses and larger town buildings in the distance, with a horse and cart moving along the main road in the foreground and the number 6982 in the lower right indicating its use as a cataloged wartime press image. The vantage point looks across the town toward its churches and civic buildings, recording the Eastern Front garrison city that would soon become the site of the 1918 peace negotiations between the German-led Central Powers and Bolshevik Russia.
Brest-Litovsk was one of the key strategic rail and fortress hubs on the Eastern Front, occupied by German forces from 1915 and used as a base for administration and supply. In late 1917 and early 1918 it hosted the peace talks that produced the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, which temporarily ended fighting between Germany and Soviet Russia and redrew the map of Eastern Europe. Historically important Eastern Front cityscapes of this quality are scarce survivors, so secure this atmospheric example now before it disappears into another collection.

Large format matte gelatin silver print on photo paper, with an applied caption slip in Dutch indicative of contemporary European press or publisher usage. The numbering on the front and the lack of later photo-agency stamps point to a wartime or immediately postwar production from an original negative. Based on paper tone, surface, and subject, this is best classified as a Type 1 original photographic print made c1915-1918.
