The vessel was operated under the US War Shipping Administration with civilian Merchant Marine crew and US Navy Armed guard gunners.. While transporting thousands of tons of heavy munitions to Mindanao, Philippine\'s, the ship was hit by a Japanese Kamikaze aircraft. A catastrophic detonation vaporized the ship. All 68 crewman where lost. Film footage exists of the mushroom cloud from the explosion taken from the escort USS Bush.
