Walter Lantz Signed Woody Woodpecker & Friends Hand-Painted Cel 1989 48/50016 Field Cel (12" x 17"). Hand-painted. Lithographic Background. Signed by Walter Lantz in dark red ink in lower left corner. Numbered 48 of 500 (only 120 were signed).This limited edition of 500 cels is an adaptation from a commemorative work created by Walter Lantz for the Doris Stein Eye Research Center of the Jules Stein Institute at U.C.L.A. The first 120 copies have been hand signed by Walter Lantz (this is copy no. 48) and were presented as gifts to major donors of the institute.This 16 field cel depicts nine famous Walter Lantz characters, five on the hand-painted cel and four on the background. The scene depicts Wood Woodpecker, his nephew Knothead, and niece Splinter greet friends Chilly Willy and Andy Panda (on the cel) as well as Oswald Rabbit, Homer Pigeon, Wally Walrus, and Buzz Buzzard (on background).The artists pencil drawing was transferred on to the cell in current (1989) animation style and then was hand-painted. The watercolor background was reproduced by lithography.The background paper measures 13" by 19". The cel measures 12" by 17". The cel is taped on to the background. This piece is in excellent condition. There is some tape residue on the back of the background paper from previous mounting.
